Our Story

Twenty-five years ago, my wife Sophie said goodbye to her father.

He was in palliative care, and those weeks were hard. Sophie had the chance to tell him goodbye and to share her love with him. What came next, nobody had prepared for. Perhaps because we can never truly accept that one day our father will be gone. Her mother was just as overwhelmed.

On a screen, in fluorescent green, one word: EXIT. The line on her father's heart monitor had gone flat. No more pulse. A cold EXIT. A team of doctors and nurses filled the room, and it was time to leave. Someone handed Sophie a slip of paper with the name and address of the nearest funeral home.

Sophie drove there. A dark, daunting place. A man in a dark suit held a form and a pen, ready to tick boxes.

Sophie knew what her father wanted. Simplicity. Cremation. A return to nature. He was a doctor and a renowned entomologist.

A pine casket. Tick.

A simple ornament. Tick.

No mark of faith. Tick.

"No," she said. "I said no mark of faith."

Simple handles. Tick.

"And the urn?" he asked, in a transactional tone.

She turned around. A dim showroom. A dusty smell. Pale light on a shelf, and on it, a metal urn in matte black.

This one. Tick.

Seven days of viewing, in a quiet room where family and friends could come to see him. The cremation. Everything included. €15,000. Tick.

Her head was spinning. That was it.

Could we do better? Could we offer the softness of a presence? A hand to hold. Someone who listens, even when sorrow is silent.

Twenty-five years later, The Urn Atelier was born.

At The Urn Atelier, we believe remembrance deserves beauty, authenticity and meaning.

We curate exceptional handcrafted urns created by independent artisans from around the world, each selected for its design, materials and distinctive character.

Our collections celebrate craftsmanship and timeless design, far from mass production. Each urn carries the skill and vision of its maker, becoming a lasting and meaningful tribute.

Wood and porcelain, glass, leather and wool: every material is chosen for its beauty, quality and enduring nature.

We work closely with artisans who share our values, so that every family can find an urn that honours their loved one with dignity and grace.

And above all, we are here to listen, at your own pace.
